Like most people, we originally bought into the easy fix for homelessness. All they needed was a helping hand--a step up. A car; a job; money.... But we soon found that the obvious physical needs were just symptoms of much deeper issues.
Eighty percent of the homeless we work with relate stories of brokenness, heartache and sadness that trace back to their earliest memories. Unfortunately, a house, money, or a job cannot erase these painful, haunting memories.
After years of listening to these stories, we have concluded that the majority of modern day homelessness in America is the direct result of the breakdown of traditional family values, leading to a lack of morals and values being instilled in children.
Raised in hostile environments without positive social development, these children grow isolated from their community and separated from vital support systems. The heartbreak of life is so overwhelming that they are driven to search for anything that will provide relief. Drugs, alcohol, or sex are but a few of the dulling agents used to deaden their pain. With one fix leading to the next, homelessness is inevitable for many of these victims.
Unless we understand and address the deeper wounds of the homeless, this segment of our population will continue to increase despite our best efforts. Giveaway programs, no matter how well funded, are not the answer. These only deal with the symptoms of the problem, leaving the root cause of homelessness unresolved.
